Located about 90 miles north of Sacramento, California State University, Chico opened its doors in the late 19th century as a normal school. As a result, the college offers noteworthy teacher preparation programs, as well as strong programs in business, behavioral and social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences. Chico State’s School of Social Work offers both bachelor’s and master’s programs in the field.

Social Work Program Overview

Chico State’s School of Social Work provides accessible, high quality programs for generalist practice in social work. Though it offers online programs, the university maintains a strong connection to Chico and the surrounding communities in Northern California. Additionally, both the BSW and the MSW programs at Chico State have performed well on several assessments carried out during the 2019 academic year.


Online Social Work Programs

The California State University, Chico School of Social Work offers hybrid and fully online options for both the BSW and the MSW programs. The BSW program is also available as a completion degree and is open to students who have already completed 60 transferable credits through a community college. The MSW program requires students to complete 34 to 36 credits and 720 practicum hours. Both programs offer full-time and part-time study plans. Admissions requirements do not differ between online and on-campus versions of each program.

On-Campus Social Work Programs

Students at Chico State can complete the BSW and the MSW program on campus in California. Each program mirrors its online counterpart in terms of curriculum, admissions requirements, and typical completion time. The MSW program offers one-year, two-year, and three-year tracks. The three-year track only involves coursework on select weekends.
