Social Work Program Overview

The Rutgers University-New Brunswick School of Social Work boasts a reputation for excellent instruction, groundbreaking research, and public service. Over 1,000 agencies and nonprofits throughout the world participate in Rutgers’s social work program, helping learners find placements for field experiences and jobs alike. Some degree candidates may choose to travel abroad for internships. Students contribute more than $15 million worth of work to nonprofit agencies every year through their practicums and volunteer hours.


Online Social Work Programs

Rutgers offers a master’s degree in social work online or through a hybrid format. The fully online option allows learners to complete all coursework asynchronously. Like all graduate-level social work students, these learners must complete field experiences. Students can leverage Rutgers’s wide network of partner agencies to find practicum opportunities at a convenient location.

Online learners may also earn certificates in programs like violence against women and children, aging and health, and promoting child and adolescent well-being. All master of social work (MSW) candidates must meet the same admissions requirements, regardless of the delivery method. Candidates with bachelor’s degrees in social work from accredited universities earn advanced standing.

On-Campus Social Work Programs

The Rutgers University school of social work offers bachelor’s, master’s, Ph.D., and doctor of social work (DSW) degrees at the New Brunswick campus. The Ph.D. program focuses on research, while the DSW concentrates on clinical social work. The school also provides continuing education and professional credit courses that help licensed social workers keep their credentials.
